remuneration originally directed was £200 per annum, that in 1863 it was lowered to £150 and in 1879 reduced to £40, at which it now stands
It is no doubt possible to find office except the duty of receiving pay, but I apprehend it is without precedent that an office should exist with duties to which no duties are attached
that an office without any attached and serious responsibility without any correlative right to remunerations
The Office of Registrar of Companies I appear to be totally distinct from every thing connected with the Supreme Court or the duties of Registrar, and that being so, it would follow that there was no power in any one except His Excellency the Governor with the advice of the Legislative Council & Hongkong and the approval of Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for the Colonial Department to make any other arrangement than in accordance with the Ordinance already referred to, and that only by amending or repealing Ordinance.
I therefore submit that my right to the remuneration to the amount mentioned is correct and the Requisition mentioned ought to be recognized notwithstanding any despatches of which I have had notice.
